Face Off Season 4!! Yay!

Published January 15, 2013 by vfdpixie

Maybe I’m biased, but I think that makeup artists are the backbone of any production.  Through them, a director’s vision is realized, and this can make or break an entire movie.  You have to be quick on your feet, and ready for any kind of disaster, from a persistent pimple to a torn prosthetic piece.  So of course I had to tune in to the premiere of Face Off Season 4, where special effects artists battle for $100,000, a new car and a guest teaching gig at Makeup Forever in New York and Paris.  Host McKenzie Westmore returns along with judges Glen Hetrick, Ve Neill, and Neville Page; and this season’s mentor is McKenzie’s father, Star Trek makeup legend Michael Westmore.

This first episode did not disappoint as the talent executed looks for two competitions.  For immunity, they first had to create a queen look based on a selection of crowns aboard the historic Queen Mary.  They had 2 hours, and you could see who were the stronger artists right off the bat.  Michael Westmore judged this first challenge, and his faves (and mine) were Jenna, Eric F. and Anthony, who ended up winning immunity.

The elimination, or spotlight challenge, involved creating a goblin king according to the land he ruled (eg. desert, jungle, forest, etc).  The artists worked in teams of two and created some pretty amazing looks. My faves were the jungle, forest, and desert kings.  Anthony ended up winning this challenge as well with his mountain goblin king, and I think he is the one to beat.  I also think Jenna, Eric F. and Eric Z. will be contenders as they seem to work well under pressure and have great confidence.  I want to post some of the looks, but as of now, there is nothing available, and as an aside, spacecast.com, you’re great, but please update your site.  Jeez!

I can’t wait to see who will blow the judges socks off as they are tough and want to be impressed, and I hope some of the seemingly weaker artists can come up from behind to make the competition interesting.
