Dark Moon: A Musical Sci-Fi Comic Trip into The Unknown

Dark Moon is an otherworldly comic book experience.  Created by Tom Freeman, a.k.a Freematik, a California-based artist/producer, this indie sci-fi horror comic will take you on a musical space journey.

In 2067 after an asteroid collision with Earth, seven survivors led by Dante, a theoretical physicist, find themselves teleported to a mysterious moon to escape the aftermath.  They are thrown into survival mode as this moon is not yet explored and there is only speculation whether it can support life.  Soon after their arrival on the moon, danger sets in as terrifying alien life forms show up as their greeting party.

This story is made unique by the soundtrack created specifically to enhance the reader’s experience.  Each of the 20 tracks make scenes in the comic all the more intense as the action unfolds.  And this soundtrack is, as the kids say, DOPE!!  D-O-P-E, DOPE!  I am biased as I love electronic music, so I really dig this melding of hip hop and trippy, dark electronic soundscapes that create a true sci-fi mood.  My top picks are:

The vocals give you insight to what the mindset of the characters may be and what they may be feeling, and the production is top-notch.  There are also some additional sounds available to enhance the main soundtrack.  What Freematik hopes is that you follow along with the music and encourages you to create your own playlist to fully experience the comic.

Benedick Bana’s slick and beautiful artwork creates an almost 3 dimensional feel, making the action jump off the page with accents of blue and red amidst the dark extraterrestrial landscapes.  The aliens will also float your boat if you are a monster fanatic like me-they are imposing, toothy and vicious.

The first issue of Dark Moon is quite the cliffhanger.  It left me wanting to know more about Dante, the survivors and the moon they have landed on.  While the intention is for the soundtrack to be the primary storytelling device here, I hope the following issues will delve deeper into the characters; who they are and their motivations by using more in-depth, natural dialogue between them, better overall writing and perhaps the use of caption boxes as a narrative guide, as well as more great music for this 4 part multimedia vision.

Graphic Novel Memetic and the Meme of Destruction

I grew up with rotary dial phones that were soon replaced with push button faces. Next came the portable, brick-sized cell phones you could carry on a purse strap.  Fast forward to this day and age, and the cell phone and tablet are now basically pocket-sized computers that help run our lives and keep us connected in a zillion ways through texts, messaging, websites and apps.  I have always been a bit of a gadget nut, and I love to see what those crazy kids come up with next, but sometimes it can be overwhelming with all the über-connectedness and social media.  It seems that you need to check in to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and any other social media outlet du jour frequently to stay up to date, in the know, and valid.  It is a job unto itself, and some take it very seriously.  What if these very same outlets were the harbingers of an apocalyptic event?  What if you had access to an image literally everywhere you looked, and what if that image wheedled its way into your brain to ultimately self-destruct?  This is the premise of Memetic, a 3 part graphic novel that will make you think twice about the power of modern communication.

Aaron Sumner is college student who is having boy troubles.  He is on the verge of breaking up with his boyfriend Ryan when a meme of a happy sloth, the “Good Times Sloth”, becomes viral in a matter of minutes.  After seeing this benign, cutesy image the viewer is overcome with a sense of euphoria and well-being.  Unfortunately, the meme is lost on Aaron because he has ocular and hearing impairments that prevents him from getting the full effect of the picture.  His friends, indeed everyone in town, is talking about the image, and Aaron begins to feel uneasy about the fervour.  He isn’t the only one.  Retired Colonel Marcus Shaw is worried by the lightning fast euphoria and frenzy associated with the phenomenon, and calls on his former intelligence colleague Barbara Xiang to look into it since he suffers from macular degeneration and has very little sight left.  The euphoria takes a sinister turn when 12 hours after seeing the image, the viewer goes berserk, tearing anyone at arm’s length limb from limb.  What follows is a dark, cautionary tale about an image that ends the world in just 3 days.

Creator and writer James Tynion IV brings us a scary take on how things could end literally in the blink of an eye.  He uses some great, non-traditional characters to tell his modern tale of doom, and the story travels with the same speed as you would imagine the meme to reach millions; fast and unforgiving to anyone that sees it.  He points out how chilling it is to be at the mercy of relentless information, how a shared experience may unify in the worst way possible, and how being an outsider could both save you and put you in doom’s way at the same time.  This literal representation of what a meme is, how it spreads, mutates and has the potential to be a thing of destruction, does a great job scaring the crap out of this reader.

Eryk Donovan’s frenetic illustrations create a real sense of chaos and destruction, in fact, just flipping through the pages will leave you unsettled even before you start reading the story.  Don’t skip the last pages of the 3 volumes where you’ll find mock Facebook and Tumblr pages that provide info on each character, and the last issue has a great section where Tynion and Donovan interview each other.

Being connected in cyberspace is a given in this age of technological advancement, but if you have ever questioned its immediacy and effects on society at large, Memetic will certainly give you a horror, sci-fi take on a familiar internet and social occurrence and maybe get us to shut off the phone, laptop or tablet…but just for a couple of hours.

Taking a Look into the Black Mirror

Black Mirror (Seasons 1-3, 2011-2014, originally aired on Channel 4)

A couple of my friends told me about Black Mirror, a British T.V. series that takes the future and makes it shiny, rich with technology and painfully dark.  Of course, they thought it would be right up my alley because I love the Brits and anything weird; and although it started in 2011, us North Americans (or maybe just little ol’ me) are just catching wind of it now on Netflix.  After binge watching all the episodes and loving each sordid take on pieces of humanity neatly arranged, duplicated or dulled by advanced gadgetry, I have a new appreciation for Luddites and a simpler life.

Three seasons in, series creator and writer Charlie Brooker aimed to unsettle the viewer and leave happy resolutions to his stories in the dust.  Using classic shows like The Twilight Zone and The Night Gallery as inspirations, Brooker wanted to devastate the audience, little by little :

From the writing to casting well-known and diverse British actors in out-of-the-box roles, he did an outstanding job. There were some episodes that were stronger that others, but I want to highlight my favourites.

The Entire History of You, episode 3 of Season 1, was extremely relatable and begs the question of whether ignorance really is bliss.  Rather than rely on a natural memory, most of the population has a “grain” implant, a tiny device that lives under the skin recording every moment of your life.  An insecure lawyer (Toby Kebbell from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) whose career and relationship is up in the air decides that his grain will help reveal the truth.  He soon tortures himself with the destructive use of memory recalled at the flick of a switch. The scenarios played out in his marriage were unsettling and realistic.  I can see most people using their implant to win an argument, or obsess and re-examine every second, except this time with painfully crystal clarity, crushing their hearts in the heaviness of life’s minutiae.  There are reports that Robert Downey Jr. has bought the rights to make this a full-length film.  Although the original writer Jesse Armstrong is behind the film script, I’m not hopeful (ugh!).

Be Right Back, the first episode from Season 2, was full of disturbing melancholy.  Martha (Agent Carter‘s Hayley Atwell) is grieving the loss of her husband Ash (Domhnall Gleeson), who was always on social media.  She is encouraged by a friend to use his social media footprint in order to keep her husband’s memory alive.  The widow goes from flat-out refusal to rising degrees of desperation in order to have him back.  It is a cautionary tale that covers two issues:  the first is the way we might grieve in the future and the lengths we may go to keep our loved ones as more than just a faded memory; the second puts our online presence in the spotlight and makes you wonder how much of yourself should put out into cyberspace and how much of it might take on a life of its own.

The second episode from the same season jangled the nerves.  White Bear opens with a woman (Being Human‘s Lenora Crichlow) who awakens to an empty house and a strange symbol on all the television sets.  When she emerges outside, there are shadowy figures in windows filming her with their smartphones, and eventually chase her through the neighbourhood, not uttering a word in reply to her pleas for help.  She has no memory of who she is or where she comes from, and once a balaclava-clad gunman drives up with her in his crosshairs, she is in for the fight of her life.  This was a brilliant take on the spectator culture we are so overrun with these days.  The community here swirls with apathy, perverse enjoyment and judgement.  I really liked the twisted ending, and it puts a microscopic lens on a specific aspect of social media culture that I personally loathe.

Season 3’s only episode, White Christmas, brings us a winding tale of that pesky spectator issue, murder and heartbreak that was really inventive.  Matt (Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm) is a chatty house mate to Joe (Rafe Spall), a sullen man of few words.  They are together for Christmas dinner, and at Matt’s cajoling, they each tell their stories of why they are in a cabin on a wintry Christmas day.  It was great to see Hamm shed his Don Draper shadow to branch out into sci-fi again.  This episode really made me think of the Outer Limits or Twilight Zone, but with a bleaker outlook for a morally numb 21st century.

Other episodes of note were The National Anthem from Season 1.  A satirical story of a British Prime Minister (played brilliantly by Penny Dreadful‘s Rory Kinnear) that has to copulate with a pig in order to save a princess was so realistically disturbing it made me feel ill instead of wanting to laugh, although it did shed light on the absurdity of political backroom negotiations and viral public opinion.  I preferred this episode to The Waldo Moment from Season 2 that broached a similar subject, this one highlighting the popularity of a cartoon bear running for office because of social media.

Another Season 1 episode, Fifteen Million Merits starring Daniel Kaluuya, made my list as well.  I first saw this young actor in the now defunct British series The Fades, as the hysterically funny best friend Mac, and he has since showcased his talent in films like Kick-Ass 2. This time, we are taken to a world where daily cycling creates power and earns riders merits which they can spend on various pastimes, like video games or porn.  You can also use them to enter a reality talent competition, which Bing (Kaluuya) does, but not for himself.  He decides to help Abi (Jessica Brown-Findlay), a girl he has a crush on, but things take a turn for the worse.  I enjoyed Kaluuya’s performance as the endearing Bing and this take on fame, the working class, image and literally selling out in the future.

I really loved the innovations that were presented in all the episodes, and kudos to the designers who created advanced but believable technology that seems to be right around the corner for us all.  Each story blended the human element and the artificial with a brilliant ease that made each scenario all the more worrying.  How much do we rely on technology?  How often do we expect a smart phone, tablet, or laptop to connect us to a virtual world that seems easier to navigate?  Is it easier, or does it just stress the animals in their caged realities?  Brookner and the Black Mirror team did a great job bringing up these questions with tales of insidious science, so-called advancement and fear…welcome to a frighteningly real future…

 

 

 

 

Ejecta BITS 2014

I would love to get inside writer Tony Burgess’s head.  I am sure it is a place of wonder and intrigue, a place where festival hits Pontypool and Hellmouth were born.  His latest brainchild, BITS Fest selection Ejecta, tackles some pretty mean aliens.

William Cassidy is a tormented man.  After being abducted, or as he put it “meeting” with “an advance life form”, he has been under their watch and control for 39 years.  His reports and theories on his alien captors have made him something of a mysterious legend online under the name Spider Nevi, and when he contacts an eager filmmaker Joe (Adam Seybold) to finally tell his story, things hit the fan as an anticipated solar event serves as a backdrop to an insane alien cat and mouse chase and interrogation by a secret military operation.

This is definitely more mainstream for Burgess, and refreshing.   I could see the Burgess substance as William waxed poetically about his alien experiences, but there was an overall popcorn movie feel that I enjoyed.  Directing team Chad Archibald and Matt Wiele (winners of a Best Director Bloodies award at the fest) created a found footage/real-time combo that didn’t confuse the story.  There was a fair amount of terror in this sci-fi gem, and the aliens were filmed in true found footage style, with glimpses of their angry, saw-toothed faces and low lit alien autopsy-like shots.  Plenty of frantic shaky camera chases kept a frenzied pace, but it was a step above many found footage films with some great performances.

Julian Richings, who is literally everywhere from the Canadian sci-fi classic Cube to the super popular Orphan Black and a Bloodies Best Actor winner, delivered as the tortured William.  His expressive, angular face captivated like no other, and Lisa Houle as the intense Dr. Tobin was equally engaging with her steely and villainous resolve to find the aliens by any means necessary; and Adam Seybold was believable as the eager Joe, who exuded a certain innocence that would be lost as the aliens took charge.  Also look for another cameo by director Bruce McDonald that provides some nutty comic relief with a touch of menace.

Burgess, Wiele, Richings and Houle were all in attendance to give us more insider tidbits that I love to hear about!  Ejecta was shot the same time as Hellmouth and Septic Man 2 years ago.  When the directors saw what they had, they decided it wasn’t what they wanted, with Wiele calling the found footage genre the “bastard child of horror” and basically shot another movie.  The incorporation of the 2 films was actually pretty seamless, making a better overall presentation.  When Burgess was asked if he thought about the genre of film while he wrote, he revealed that he didn’t and the story just comes regardless of the genre.  What is consistent with him is a guaranteed surreal world that has been respected by his directors.

I have seen enough films with the common denominator of Tony Burgess to know that I am rarely disappointed, and Ejecta is no exception.  If you want some mystery and mean, determined aliens, check it out!

(As an aside, I had a cool experience that night.  As you all know, I love Stephen McHattie, Canadian actor extraordinaire.  He showed up to the Ejecta screening to support his friends, and I got a chance to say hello.  There is always a fear that someone you hold in high regard will disappoint you, but he was so nice!  We shook hands, had a laugh and I gave him my card so he could read my “love letter” to him.  One thing off of my bucket list!)
